Book Review: You Were Never Not Mine (Lancaster Prep Next Generation)

As an avid fan of the Lancaster universe, receiving an ARC of You Were Never Not Mine by Monica Murphy felt like winning a mini jackpot. The moment I saw the email announcing my selection thanks to Valentines PR, my heart did a little happy dance! This universe has captivated me time and again, and I couldn’t wait to dive into the next chapter. Little did I know, this ride wouldn’t be without its surprises.

From the opening pages, the chemistry between Sinclair and August Lancaster ignited a spark that had me hooked. Their flirty banter, laced with palpable tension, is reminiscent of a classic enemies-to-lovers trope, but with a modern twist. Watching August fall head over heels for Sinclair was a joy. Trust me when I say, his "I hate you" vibes masked a deep obsession that acted like glue throughout the narrative. That push-pull dynamic kept me engaged, turning pages late into the night.

Now, let’s talk about August. He’s definitely a character you can love to hate, protecting the legacy of his father, Whitt Lancaster, but without the baggage that made Whitt so… well, complicated. Yes, August has his share of red flags, and yes, he has that classic "high school bully" aura, but he’s not Whitt 2.0, which is a relief. Murphy does an excellent job of creating a layered character: flawed yet swoon-worthy. I found myself cheering for him despite knowing all the questionable traits he inherited from his lineage.

Sinclair, on the other hand, held her ground beautifully. While she reminded me a bit of Arabella, she’s a unique force in her own right. I really enjoyed her fierce spirit, though her friendships were a bit of a mixed bag for me. As for her parents, let’s just say they fit snugly into the classic trope of the “shitty parental figures,” which we’re all too familiar with in this universe.

The pacing of the story felt just right—no third-act break-up drama here! Instead, Murphy crafts a fun story free from excessive angst, allowing the characters to explore their relationship sincerely and humorously. The writing style feels like home for those familiar with this universe; it’s warm, witty, and addictive.

However, I will admit: the second epilogue took me by surprise—not in a good way. A nostalgic chapter from August’s perspective when he was still so young felt unnecessary, especially considering the implications of his feelings toward Sinclair at that age. It added an uneasy edge that just didn’t sit right with me. Also, a few inconsistencies regarding characters from previous books had me raising my eyebrows. But honestly, I was having too much fun to let those moments fully derail my enjoyment.

Despite a few hiccups, I genuinely loved this book. It feels like a cozy blanket at the end of the series, wrapping up threads I didn’t know I craved. I wholeheartedly recommend You Were Never Not Mine to fans of the Lancaster universe and anyone looking for a New Adult romance filled with steamy chemistry and humor. It may not be perfect for every reader—especially those who harbor a resentment toward Whitt Lancaster—but if you’re willing to give August a chance, I promise it will be a delightful escape.

Ultimately, this book soothed my worries in a chaotic world and reminded me why I love to read: to get lost in the lives of characters who feel like old friends. Here’s hoping for more Lancaster stories in the future—even if this one wraps it all beautifully.
