Book Review: The Twisted Throne (The Bridge Kingdom, #5) by Danielle L. Jensen

As I dived into The Twisted Throne, the fifth installment in Danielle L. Jensen’s captivating The Bridge Kingdom series, I felt a familiar thrill that reminded me of the exhilaration I felt reading the earlier books. The blend of political intrigue, forbidden romance, and complex characters had me hooked from the get-go, but this time, it was Ahnna’s journey that piqued my interest the most. Finally getting her story not only promised a deeper exploration of her character but also an exciting new setting to navigate.

The narrative is rich with two distinct points of view, allowing us insight into both Ahnna’s determination and the chaotic world around her. Jensen has beautifully expanded her universe, immersing readers in a tapestry of political scheming. The complexities of trust—and who can truly claim to be an ally—run deep. Ahnna is in a precarious position, surrounded by unlikable secondary characters that serve to emphasize her isolation. Honestly, I found myself wishing she had at least one genuine ally. Instead, she contends with manipulators lurking in every corner, making her struggles even more relatable.

Ahnna certainly comes across as naïve, often trusting those she knows she shouldn’t. It’s a double-edged sword; while it showcases her resilience and strength, it also leaves her vulnerable. Frustratingly, she often does the opposite of what James advises, which felt less like independence and more like stubbornness at times. I vacillated between rooting for her and wanting to shake her for her decisions—but isn’t that what makes a character human?

Ahnna’s relationship with James offers a tantalizing glimpse of forbidden love, replete with tension and passion. However, I couldn’t help but feel that their connection lacked the depth or explosive chemistry seen in previous pairings like Lara and Aren. Their attraction is palpable, yes, and Jensen doesn’t hold back when it comes to delivering some steamy moments. Yet, the dichotomy of their duty versus desire was at times overshadowed by their frustrations, leaving me wanting a bit more substance.

The plot itself is a rollercoaster ride, especially in the last ten percent. Twists and betrayals unfold at a breathtaking pace, leaving readers—and Ahnna—reeling. I admit, Jensen’s knack for cliffhangers left me with my heart in my throat. The emotional stakes ramp up so voraciously that I was unable to set the book down.

One notable point—Ahnna’s anger toward Lara and Aren strikes me as controversial but authentic. It raises questions about loyalty, sacrifice, and the blurred lines of personal feelings versus political strategy. This tension adds depth to the narrative and forces readers to reflect on the harsh realities of alliances.

Overall, The Twisted Throne is not without its flaws, but Jensen manages to weave an engaging tale filled with unpredictability and emotional intensity. While I landed at a solid 3.5 stars, it’s compelling enough that I’m eager for the next installment.

If you enjoy intense political dramas with a touch of romance, The Twisted Throne is certainly worth your time. Though Ahnna may feel a bit lost at times, her journey is relatable, and her story is one I believe will resonate with many readers. This book serves as a reminder that love and betrayal often walk hand in hand, and sometimes, navigating our emotions can be the most dangerous game of all.
