And while I found myself drawn into its enchanting world, it left me feeling a tad bittersweet.
At its heart, the story revolves around Avery and Saga, two endearing protagonists whose chemistry radiates like a warm hearth. Their witty banter and occasional misunderstandings create a delightful tension, adding a softness to the murder mystery that surrounds them. Yet, these footnotes sometimes felt like unwelcome detours, pulling me away from the narrative’s momentum rather than enhancing it. As a reader, I craved a more fluid connection to the unfolding mystery rather than a series of academic digressions.
Pacing also playfully danced around my expectations. While I cherish a slow-burn romance, the hesitation between Avery and Saga sometimes felt more torturous than tantalizing. Their budding relationship had all the right sparks, but I wished to see them take bolder steps toward love rather than just pining from a distance. I found myself yearning for a more decisive push, especially since the story unfolds over a relatively short timeline.
The intricacies of the murders, while compelling, left me questioning some aspects. The choice to extract organs from various victims felt puzzling and not adequately unpacked by the narrative’s end. While the motives became clear, the mechanics of the murders conjured more confusion than clarity, revealing gaps in the tightly woven plot I hoped to traverse.
One aspect I longed to explore was the notion of hearth witchery itself. Despite Saga’s affinity for cooking and her whispers of magical practices, she never fully embraced the role of a hearth witch. I was left wanting more tangible examples of her craft, especially given the book’s title.
