Book Review: Crash (Sinners and Saints #1) by Kathy Lockheart

From the moment I came across Crash by Kathy Lockheart, I knew I was in for a ride that would tug at my heartstrings. As a passionate reader, I often crave stories that not only entertain but resonate deeply on a personal level. When I saw it featured by Valentine PR, I jumped at the chance to snag an ARC. As someone who doesn’t shy away from being honest about my reviews—even for ARCs—I dove into this one with both excitement and a touch of skepticism. Spoiler alert: my skepticism was quickly overshadowed.

At its core, Crash beautifully intertwines the brother’s best friend trope with a gripping medical mystery. Blake and Tessa’s journey is rich and layered, taking us through the complexities of childhood friendships morphing into deeper connections. Their bond is fraught with emotional depth, largely resonating with me due to my own experiences with the medical uncertainties that life can throw our way. Tessa’s battle with a medical mystery felt painfully familiar; the frustrations of endless hospital appointments, being dismissed, and spiraling into feelings of hopelessness struck a chord. Lockheart captures this emotional turmoil with authenticity, making it impossible not to empathize with Tessa’s struggle.

What I appreciated immensely was how the narrative handled Tessa’s emotional journey. I found myself reflecting on the times I too felt like giving in. Her triumph in rediscovering her inner strength is nothing short of inspiring. This theme of resilience is interwoven with the pulsating romance between her and Blake—whose dark, morally grey persona adds a delicious layer of complexity to the story. As someone who adores morally grey characters, Blake’s evolution was a highlight for me. He transforms gradually, with this change feeling organically woven into the fabric of the story. There’s something poignant about a character learning to see the world—and themselves—through a different lens.

Kathy Lockheart’s writing style is both engaging and immersive. The pacing was exhilarating, to the point where I found myself binge-reading through two sittings, attempting to savor each moment while desperately needing to know what happened next. The plot is well-structured, with enough twists and side stories to keep you captivated until the last page. Lockheart isn’t afraid to embrace darkness, blending action, romance, and that enigmatic sense of urgency seamlessly.

For those who’ve previously enjoyed Lockheart’s works, you’ll find plenty of familiar vibes—morally grey heroes, emotional struggles, and a touch of the forbidden. If this is your first foray into her writing, you’re in for a treat. Crash doesn’t just offer romance; it invites readers into a world that explores the chaotic dance between health and hope, love and loss.

As I close the book, I can’t help but feel an eager anticipation for the next installment in the Sinners and Saints series. I may wish I could relive the raw emotions I felt with Tessa and Blake for the first time, but I am thoroughly satisfied with this journey.
