A Farewell to Electra McDonnell: Reflections on One Final Turn
Oh, where do I even begin with One Final Turn? Ashley Weaver has wrapped up the Electra McDonnell series with a delightful yet bittersweet conclusion that feels like saying goodbye to a cherished friend. As I turned the final page, I was overwhelmed by a mixture of satisfaction and heartache, knowing I had just finished a journey I had desperately wanted to last a little longer.
In the fifth installment of this captivating series, Ellie McDonnell finds herself wandering the sun-soaked streets of Lisbon, a far cry from the dark, bomb-ravaged London we’ve come to know. The juxtaposition of the vibrant city against the backdrop of World War II’s devastation is staggering. Through Weaver’s skillful prose, Lisbon shines as a character in its own right—a joyful escape that amplifies Ellie’s adventures and emotional turmoil. I relished watching her gallivant around the city with Archie while engaging in some deliciously light emotional warfare with Ramsey. It was a perfect blend of charm and tension that made me chuckle and sigh in equal measure.
While the central mission in this book takes a backseat to character development and emotional depth, it allows for some truly memorable moments. However, I did find myself longing for more of Ellie’s renowned safe-cracking skills—her unique talent felt conspicuously absent. Instead, we see her picking locks, and while that’s all well and good, I couldn’t help but miss those electrifying moments of suspense that marked earlier installments.
And then there’s Ellie’s relationship with Ramsey. I was expecting a grand finale in their intricate dance, but the resolution felt a tad rushed. Their decision to stay married left me yearning for deeper exploration: how would they navigate the complexities of peacetime? What role would Ellie carve out for herself beyond being Mrs. Ramsey? It’s as if the author took a shortcut when the highway of their relationship was begging for a scenic route. I craved more insight into Ramsey’s character, especially concerning his ties to Jocelyn. It’s these threads left hanging, where I found my biggest irritation, yet they also speak to how deeply I connect with these characters. They became real enough for me to feel the stakes of their choices.
Even with these minor quibbles, I couldn’t give One Final Turn anything but five stars. It’s a testament to how profoundly the series has resonated with me. During a particularly challenging period in my life, Ellie’s spirit and resilience buoyed me up—she became a reflection of the strength I often struggled to find in myself.
Ashley Weaver, thank you for creating a world so rich and characters so vibrant I can hardly bear to say goodbye. Although this installment marked the conclusion of Ellie’s story, I can only hope we might see her again in future works. For anyone who loves historical fiction that combines adventure with heartfelt moments and character growth, this series is a must-read.
As I close this chapter, I’m left both fulfilled and hopeful. Here’s to the journeys that await us in books yet to be opened!
